INDIA GOES NUCLEAR AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

  •   1957-large nuclear science and technology complex at Trombay later renamed as Bhabha  Atomic Research Center (BARC)

  •  May 1974- India's first attempt at testing a nuclear weapon underground explosion  .Canadians froze all assistance to India.it is unable to import raw materials, components, equipment, and technology that are directly or indirectly required for its nuclear facilities.

  •  May 18, 1974-peaceful nuclear test code named the ‘Smiling Buddha’ was conducted. The most significant achievement was that India succeeded in conducting the test without being detected by the US and other international intelligence agencies.

  • The device tested was a fission device and there had been no release of radioactivity in the atmosphere

  • With the Smiling Buddha, India became the world's sixth nuclear power after the United States, Soviet Union, Britain, France and China to successfully test out a nuclear bomb.

  •  First Chairman of The Atomic Energy Commission of India.
  •  In 1934, he worked with Niels Bohr on the studies that led to quantum theory
  • In quantum physics, the cross section of electron-positron scattering was renamed “Bhabha     scattering” in his honor.
  • In 1955,Bhabha was chairman of the first United Nations Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, held in Geneva .
