HOW HUAWEI BECOME VIRAL

ABOUT HUAWEI

Huawei is the world’s No.1 telecom supplier and No.2 Phone manufacturer. The 46-year-old is also known as Cathy or Sabrina Meng. She is the daughter of Ren Zhengfei. He is the founder Huawei technologies in 1987.

Ren Zhengfei

He was a very low-ranking officer in the People’s Liberation Army.he founded Huawei - the name can be translated as “splendid achievement” or “China is able” - to sell simple telecoms equipment to the rural Chinese market. Within a few years, Huawei was developing and producing the equipment itself.

Sometime in the early 90s, Huawei won a government contract to provide telecoms equipment for the People’s Liberation Army. In 1995,Huawei was given the status of a Chinese “national champion”. In practice, this meant the government closed the market to foreign competition.

Meng is chief financial officer of China tech giant Huawei Technologies Co Ltd.

 CONCERNS  OVER 5G  TECHNOLOGY

Huawei is facing heightened scrutiny as phone carriers prepare to roll out fifth-generation technology in which Huawei is a leading competitor. 5G is designed to support a vast expansion of networks to serve medical devices, self-driving cars and other technology. That increases the cost of potential security failures and has prompted governments increasingly to treat telecoms communications networks as strategic assets.

These concerns have been brought to the fore with the advent of “fifth generation” or 5G mobile internet, which promises download speeds 10 or 20 times faster than at present, and much greater connectivity between devices.

 ACCUSATIONS ON MENG

Meng is accused by U.S. authorities of bank fraud for misleading HSBC about Huawei’s relationship with a company operating in Iran, putting HSBC at risk of fines and penalties for breaking U.S. sanctions on Tehran.

The charge of stealing trade secrets centers on a robotic tool - developed by T-Mobile - known as Tappy. According to legal documents, Huawei had tried to buy Tappy, a device which mimicked human fingers by tapping mobile phone screens rapidly to test responsiveness.

T-Mobile was in partnership with Huawei at the time, but it rebuffed the Chinese firm’s offers, fearing it would use the technology to make phones for T-Mobile’s competitors.

It’s alleged that one of Huawei’s US employees then smuggled Tappy’s robotic arm into his satchel so that he could send its details to colleagues in China.

Two Canadians were arrested by Chinese authorities on national security charges, prompting suggestions abroad they might be hostages to secure Meng's release.

Does HUAWEI did an espionage?

HUAWEI is a pioneer but is accused of being gateway for china to spy on Western nations.

U.S authorities allege that Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou committed fraud by lying to American banks about her company's ties to a telecommunications firm that did business in Iran. That business was a breach of sanctions on Iran, U.S. justice officials allege.

Dec. 1, 2018: Meng is arrested at Vancouver airport by Canadian police. The arrest was set in motion by a request from American officials.

Dec. 11, 2018:Canada confirms that Michael Kovrig, a former diplomat working with International Crisis Group, has been detained in China. That same day, Meng is released on $10 million bail with several conditions, including a requirement that she surrender her passport and pay for 24/7 monitoring.

As part of the bail conditions, she was given an electronic ankle bracelet monitoring tag and a curfew, but is allowed to travel around much of Vancouver.

Dec. 12, 2018:Chinese media report that another Canadian, businessman Michael Spavor, has been detained on suspicion of endangering national security. Spavor is founder of an organization that arranges travel to North Korea.

May . 15,2020:the US Commerce Department outlined further restrictive measures on Huawei to restrict it from making chips using US technologies using American-based IP or even equipment. The new rules mean that Huawei would need a license to use any US tech.

The company was added to the US Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security Entity List in May 2019, banning Huawei from US communications networks.Trump extended the order until 2021.

Singapore Telecommunications, which is the country's largest telecom, chose to use selected Europe's Ericsson and Nokia over Huawei to develop the city-state's main 5G network
